Feeding Betta Fish
Now that you have your Betta fish, how are you going to feed it? You may be eager to keep your little new friend very healthy, but be careful, it’s easy to overdo it.
As you will have surely already heard, you must feed your Betta well to give it the nutrition it needs to live a healthy and long life.
But what does that mean exactly? Let’s start with the basics.
How Much to Feed Your Betta?
Remember that the number one cause of Betta fish illness is contaminated water. Any uneaten food will rot and contribute to bacteria growth in the tank. So rule number one: do not overfeed your Betta.
If you don’t watch it, your Betta will most likely eat too much. Bettas, left to their own devices, will overeat.
Fasting one day a week is also very helpful to Bettas.
When to Feed Your Betta?
The best time for feeding your Betta is about an hour before sunset or an hour after sunrise. But if this doesn’t fit with your schedule, pick a time that’s convenient to you and stick with it. Whatever time you choose, stick to it every day.
What to Feed Your Betta?
Bettas are carnivores. Bettas cannot thrive on a vegetarian diet. The healthiest food for Bettas is called Hikari Bio-Gold. Imported from Japan, this is a staple Betta food.
Occasionally, feed Betta some frozen Mysis shrimp.
Blood worms should be given infrequently.
Daphnia (water fleas) are another “treat”. You can use it two days per week.
You can also give tiny pieces of white chicken meat or a tiny cooked and cooled-down pea with the skin peeled off.
You must feed your Betta a variety of foods to maintain its health.The more variety the better. Bettas need a variety of foods to stay healthy.
Be sure to remove any uneaten food from the Betta’s tank. Remember – leftover food will produce toxins and ammonia. And unclean water will weaken your fish and probably make it sick.
Be vigilant and maintain the variety, even if your Betta shows a strong preference for one type of food.
How to Feed Your Betta?
Use your fingers to drop the food in the tank. Get your Betta used to coming and expecting the food to come from your hand. It’s a great way for you to bond! Bettas are not bottom feeders. Thet will come up for food. Your Betta may grab the food and swim away to eat it in one of its hiding spots. Fish often feel threatened when they eat, even when they are alone in the tank.
