Fly fishing is not as complicated as it looks. If you apply a little common sense, you will be successful. A lot of it comes down to looking at things from the point of view of the fish. This report will show you some successful methods for improving your fly fishing abilities.
There’s a good reason why so many fishers go out very early in the morning and also at dusk. These times of day are generally the best times for catching trout and other fish you may be after. That’s when all of the bugs appear, as you no doubt know if you’ve been around any body of water during those times. As a result, the fish are out and about also to get their breakfast or dinner. Consequently, if you want to be a successful fly fisher, follow the same pattern and schedule as the insects that the fish come to the surface to eat. And don’t forget the insect repellent! You may be fishing with a phony fly, but the real bugs will be eating off of you. Another benefit of following this schedule and mainly fishing early morning or early evening is that the wind will be calmer. It’s hard to do a good cast when it’s windy. Your best bet is to try to avoid fishing on windy days.
You should always follow proper fishing etiquette, whether you’re fishing close to home or somewhere far away that you may never return to. Fishermen need to be polite, and not trespass, so don’t ever fish on land that is privately owned without having permission. Fishermen like their own private spot, so if someone beat you to the spot you wanted, go find another one, and come back later. If other fishermen are in the area, always go up river from them. Real fishermen never damage anything, and they leave things better than they found them, and don’t leave their mess for someone else to clean up.
The most accomplished fly fishers don’t do anything randomly, but pay close attention to what’s going on around them. Make this a habit for yourself, also. Pay attention to what goes on around you and especially watch for patterns. Which brings up the point that it’s always a wise to have one or two areas that you study for a period of time so you learn the habitat. The subtle changes of the environment will elude you if you are always changing your location. A fishing journal is always a good idea. Keep track of any variables that you can measure and then track the results you get. Anything you can note that has the potential of being different from trip to trip should be written down. This can include how active the fish are, the ambient temperature and water temperature, and of course, obvious factors such as the date and time you are fishing. Then measure this against your results – how many fish you catch, what time you caught them, how large they were, etc.
The more you can learn about fly fishing, the more success you’ll have. There’s a lot more to fishing than just showing up at a stream with your pole – you have to discover everything that it takes to cause the fish to start biting. You may be in a hurry to become a professional fly fisher, but enjoy the learning stage. It can be filled with many enjoyable hours of fly fishing.
