Aquatic Workouts: A Great Way For Seniors to stay fit
Aquatic fitness addresses the concerns seniors have when considering a regular fitness routine. Many senior citizens tend to shy away from a regular exercise routine, stating chronic health concerns, possibility of injury or fall, and stress or soreness of the joints.
Aquatic fitness routines are low-impact workouts, meaning they do not add stress to the joints. Running, for example, is a high impact exercise because it places added stress on the joints when your foot hits the pavement at an increased speed. Aquatic fitness programs are ideal for those with joint problems and soreness.
Benefits of aquatic exercise include: maintain or lose weight, increased metabolism, helps to reduce the impact of illness and chronic disease, enhances mobility, flexibility and balance, slows down age related loss of muscle mass and decreases loss of reaction time.
A regular fitness routine of any kind can help to improve sleep, boost mood and self confidence, and is good for the brain. Exercise helps with brain function and can help keep it active.
Some choices for aquatic exercise routines include:
Water Pilates: a core strength exercise program which uses the natural resistance of water for strengthening combined with yoga like moves for stretching and flexibility.
Water Dance: Just like dancing on land. Water dancing can be a high intensity, high calorie burning activity or a low intensity core strength training activity. Either way when done in the water it becomes a low impact exercise.
Water Jogging: Unlike water dancing and water Pilates water jogging requires a flotation device. The device goes around the waist to help support the body, you than jog or run. You can run in intervals varying from a quick sprint to a fast walk. You can even do a long distance run by running at the same speed for a predetermined length of time.
Most everyone can agree working out regularly and staying fit is highly beneficial to overall health and wellbeing at any age. Studies have shown that an in-active sedentary lifestyle can decrease a person’s ability to remain independent and self-sufficient. In addition, an in-active life style for seniors can lead to an increased number of doctor’s visits, increased personal health insurance premiums, hospitalization and medications.
Go ahead, take the plunge and try out an aqua fitness program. Check your local YMCA for classes which have been designed by the YMCA and Arthritis Foundation specifically for those with arthritis. Consult your physician before starting an aqua fitness program or any other fitness program.
